Saying ‘No’ to diets

As a personal trainer of over 16 years, I have witnessed many things within the fitness industry, good and bad. But all of these experiences I feel have helped me become a personal trainer that can guarantee results. I know that if a client follows everything I set them, they can be in the best shape of their life and easily maintain it.

 

In my opinion, there are a lot of bad areas in the health and fitness world. I feel that I should start with some of the major things that need to be mentioned for people to learn to eat properly and not fear food.

 

Over the years, I have seen many men and women try an array of fad diets. From my experience, some clients have lost a lot of weight but have really struggled to maintain the weight loss and/or keep if off. This is due to many diets being unsustainable as they are so restrictive. What many people that undertake these radical fad diets do not realise, is that the fad diet companies rely on you not keeping the weight off long term. Their business requires you to become a yoyo dieter in order for them to make regular income out of you. If you lost the weight on one of these diets and kept it off permanently, you would never need to pay them anymore money. That, in their eyes is not good business.

 

The idea behind this is that you will obviously lose the weight on many, if not all of these fad diets as they are so restrictive in calories. They know that if they massively restrict your dietary intake, you will burn more than you are taking in, so you will lose weight. However your body goes into a phase known as ‘starvation mode’. Because of the restriction of calories, your body is in effect starving. So when you complete the fad diet (when you have reached your target weight or you have grown bored of it), you will start to bring your eating to some form of normality. As your calories have obviously increased since finishing the diet, your body’s natural survival mechanisms kick in. Since your body has not been getting enough fuel, it starts to hold on to the extra fuel it’s getting in. Therefore in time your weight starts to go back on again.

 

In some cases people not only put on the weight they originally lost on the diet, they also put on more. The companies of the fad diets now know that you will be thinking ‘How did I lose the weight before?’ Therefore the majority of people know they lost the weight before on the fad diet, and they happily hand more money over to buy the companies shakes, diet bars etc. My view is that if these diets worked in the first place, they would not be in business for long as you would have no need to go back. Some of the fad diet companies have been around for many years which tells you one thing – if you want to lose weight and keep it off, don’t fall for fad diets.
